Creamy, sweet, and mellow. Coffee liqueur brings a rich mocha sweetness, vodka keeps the base clean and boozy, and a float of cream turns the whole thing into something close to a boozy iced coffee. Smooth and indulgent — dessert you can drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Vodka
  • 1 oz Coffee Liqueur
  • 1 oz Heavy Cream

Method

  1. 1

Fill a rocks glass with ice.

  2. 2

Add the vodka and coffee liqueur.

  3. 3

Slowly pour the heavy cream over the back of a spoon so it floats and swirls.

  4. 4

Stir gently before drinking, if you like.

The Story

The White Russian is a 1960s creation — a "Black Russian" (vodka and coffee liqueur) with a float of cream — and neither version has anything to do with Russia beyond the vodka. It drifted toward obscurity until 1998, when *The Big Lebowski* made it the drink of The Dude, who orders one in nearly every scene. That single film turned a dated after-dinner sipper into a permanent cult favorite.
