The Story

"Virgin Mary" is the traditional name for a non-alcoholic Bloody Mary, not simply a description of what's missing — the same savory tomato-and-spice build the Bloody Mary is famous for, minus the vodka, ordered by its own name at brunch tables that would rather not explain the substitution every time. It's carried the exact same seasoning conventions (Worcestershire, hot sauce, celery salt) since the Bloody Mary itself was standardized in the mid-20th century.
