Dry gin and vermouth with a cherry-almond sweetness and a faint anise aroma. Silky, aromatic, and just complicated enough.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz London Dry Gin
  • 1.5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 0.25 oz Maraschino Liqueur
  • 0.25 oz Absinthe
  • 1 dash Orange Bitters
  • Lemon twist · optional garnish

Method

    Add the gin, dry vermouth, maraschino, absinthe, and orange bitters to a mixing glass with ice.

    Stir until well-chilled, about 20-30 seconds.

    Strain into a chilled coupe.

    Express a lemon twist over the drink and drop it in.

The Story

The Turf Cocktail appears in early twentieth-century cocktail books as a Martini variation with maraschino liqueur and absinthe. It takes its name from horse racing, the "turf," and has been a cult favorite with classic-cocktail fans ever since.
