Sherry Cobbler
ClassicSherry over crushed ice with orange. The drink that made the straw famous.
Bright and mellow, with amontillado sherry's warm, nutty depth lifted by fresh orange and a touch of sugar. The crushed ice keeps it cold and dilute-crisp — a gentle, fruit-laced sipper that goes down far too easily.
Ingredients
- 3 oz Amontillado Sherry
- 0.5 oz Fresh Orange Juice
- 0.5 oz Simple Syrup
- Orange slice · optional garnish
- Berries · optional garnish
Method
- 1
Add every ingredient to a shaker with ice.

Garnish generously with an orange slice and seasonal berries, and serve with a straw.
The Story
The Sherry Cobbler was one of the most popular drinks in nineteenth-century America — Charles Dickens rhapsodized about it in "Martin Chuzzlewit," and it helped popularize both crushed ice and the drinking straw. Little more than sherry, sugar, and citrus over a mound of ice, it was refreshing, low in proof, and endlessly photogenic long before photographs. It is the original cooler.
