The Manhattan, gone Scottish.

Rich and gently smoky. Scotch brings malt and a whisper of peat, sweet vermouth adds dried fruit and spice, and aromatic bitters tie it into a warming, spirit-forward sipper.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Scotch Whisky
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Brandied cherry · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Add the Scotch, sweet vermouth, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice.

  2. 2

Stir until well-chilled, about 20-30 seconds.

  3. 3

    Strain into a chilled coupe.

  4. 4

    Garnish with a brandied cherry.

The Story

Created in 1894 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York to mark the premiere of a Broadway operetta about the Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor. It is, in essence, a Manhattan built on Scotch instead of rye — proof that a great template travels, and that a single swap of base spirit can give a familiar drink a whole new accent.
