Classic

A New Orleans Martini haunted by absinthe.

3 minEasyStrong

Bone-dry and aromatic. A classic Martini spine of juniper and dry vermouth, shadowed by absinthe's licorice-and-herb perfume and a cooling, faintly numbing finish. Crisp, cold and serious — a Martini for anise lovers.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 oz Gin
  • 0.5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 0.25 oz Absinthe
  • Lemon peel · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Add every ingredient to a mixing glass with ice.

  2. 2

    Stir until well chilled.

  3. 3

Strain into a chilled martini glass.

  4. 4

Express a lemon peel over the surface and drop it in.

The Story

The Obituary is a New Orleans variation on the Dry Martini, credited to the city's love of absinthe and popularized in Stanley Clisby Arthur's cocktail writing. It is simply a gin Martini given a small measure of absinthe — enough to wreath the drink in anise and wormwood without tipping it over. The grave name is pure New Orleans humor for a drink that is, in truth, bracingly elegant.
