A Martini, with an onion.

Dry and savory. Everything a Martini is — juniper, cold, and clean — plus a salty, briny umami note from the onion that sets it apart.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 oz Gin
  • 0.5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • Cocktail onions · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Add the gin and dry vermouth to a mixing glass with ice.

  2. 2

Stir until thoroughly chilled, about 30 seconds.

  3. 3

Strain into a chilled martini glass.

  4. 4

Garnish with a pair of cocktail onions.

The Story

A dry gin Martini distinguished by a single detail — pickled cocktail onions in place of an olive or a twist. The origin is disputed (the illustrator Charles Dana Gibson is one popular candidate), but the effect isn't: the briny onion turns a crisp Martini savory, giving it an umami edge that drinks almost like a snack.
