The Story
The French Connection takes its name from the 1971 crime film, arriving on bar menus not long after as a fashionable after-dinner order — cognac for the "French," amaretto standing in for the Italian half of the story. It has no earlier history to speak of and needs none: a level pour of two spirits over ice is the entire recipe, and that simplicity is exactly why it never left the digestif menu.
