Classic

Gin, elderflower, and lemon crowned with champagne — floral and effervescent.

Floral and bright. Elderflower brings a honeyed, pear-and-lychee sweetness that softens the gin's juniper, lemon keeps it crisp, and champagne lifts it into something delicate and celebratory. Elegant and easy — flowers in a flute.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Gin
  • 0.5 oz Elderflower Liqueur
  • 0.5 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Champagne to top
  • Lemon twist · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Shake the gin, elderflower liqueur, and lemon with ice until chilled.

  2. 2

    Strain into a chilled flute.

  3. 3

    Top with champagne.

  4. 4

    Garnish with a lemon twist.

The Story

The French 77 is the modern, floral answer to the French 75 — the same gin-lemon-champagne skeleton with elderflower liqueur standing in for the sugar. It rode the wave of elderflower's craft-cocktail comeback in the late 2000s, when a single bottle of St-Germain seemed to appear behind every bar. Softer and more perfumed than its namesake, it's become a brunch and wedding staple.
