Clean and balanced, with bright lemon and juniper-forward gin in classic sour proportion. The Angostura is the whole point: it adds a warm, spiced complexity that lifts the drink from simple to memorable.

The Story

The Fitzgerald was created by Dale DeGroff at New York's Rainbow Room in the 1990s, as he worked to revive classic technique during the cocktail dark ages. It is the plainest of ideas — a gin sour — rescued by two dashes of Angostura, which give it the aromatic backbone a plain sour lacks. DeGroff has called it a drink built to teach the value of bitters.
