Smoky, bittersweet, and tart. Mezcal's campfire smoke meets Aperol's bitter orange and maraschino's cherry, all pulled taut by a spine of fresh lime.

  • 0.75 oz Aperol
  • 0.5 oz Maraschino Liqueur
  • 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • Grapefruit twist · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Add the mezcal, Aperol, maraschino, and lime juice to a shaker with ice.

  2. 2

    Shake until well-chilled.

  3. 3

    Double-strain into a chilled coupe.

  4. 4

Express a grapefruit twist over the surface and drop it in.

The Story

A 2011 creation by Phil Ward at New York's Mayahuel, built on the equal-parts logic of the Last Word but swapping in mezcal and Aperol. It became a modern classic almost immediately and helped push mezcal onto cocktail menus around the world.
