Smoky, bittersweet, and tart. Mezcal's campfire smoke meets Aperol's bitter orange and maraschino's cherry, all pulled taut by a spine of fresh lime.
Ingredients
- 1 oz Mezcal
- 0.75 oz Aperol
- 0.5 oz Maraschino Liqueur
- 0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice
- Grapefruit twist · optional garnish
Method

Add the mezcal, Aperol, maraschino, and lime juice to a shaker with ice.

Shake until well-chilled.

Double-strain into a chilled coupe.

Express a grapefruit twist over the surface and drop it in.
The Story
A 2011 creation by Phil Ward at New York's Mayahuel, built on the equal-parts logic of the Last Word but swapping in mezcal and Aperol. It became a modern classic almost immediately and helped push mezcal onto cocktail menus around the world.
