Gently sweet and herbal, with dry and sweet vermouth playing bitter against honeyed. Maraschino adds a floral cherry note and Angostura a spiced backbone — complex and satisfying at a fraction of a cocktail's strength.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Dry Vermouth
  • 1.5 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 0.25 oz Maraschino Liqueur
  • 1 dash Angostura Bitters
  • Cherry · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Add every ingredient to a mixing glass with ice.

  2. 2

    Stir until well chilled.

  3. 3

    Strain into a chilled coupe.

  4. 4

    Garnish with a cherry.

The Story

The Diplomat is a vermouth cocktail from the era when vermouth was a drink in its own right, not merely a modifier — it turns up in cocktail books from the early twentieth century onward. Balancing dry and sweet vermouth with a whisper of maraschino and bitters, it is essentially a spirit-free Manhattan. It has found new life among drinkers seeking flavor without the alcohol.
