Black Russian
ClassicIBA OfficialVodka and coffee liqueur. Dark and simple.
Rich, dark, and boozy. Coffee liqueur brings a deep mocha sweetness with notes of roasted coffee and vanilla, while vodka keeps the base clean and lets the drink stay strong and spirit-forward. Smooth and bittersweet — a grown-up nightcap in two pours.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Vodka
- 1 oz Coffee Liqueur
Method
- 1
Fill a rocks glass with ice.
- 2
Add the vodka and coffee liqueur.
- 3
Stir gently to combine.
The Story
The Black Russian was mixed in 1949 by bartender Gustave Tops at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, reportedly in honor of an American ambassador — "black" for the color, "Russian" for the vodka. Add a float of cream and it becomes its more famous descendant, the White Russian. On its own it's a spare, spirit-forward after-dinner sipper: two ingredients, no fuss, all mocha and warmth.
