The Story
The Americano dates to the 1860s in Gaspare Campari's Milan bar, where it was first known as the "Milano-Torino" for its two components — Campari from Milan and sweet vermouth from Turin. It picked up its current name during the early 1900s, reputedly for the American tourists who took a liking to it. Its real claim to fame came in 1919, when Count Camillo Negroni asked for his to be fortified with gin instead of soda — and the Negroni was born.
