Alaska

Classic

Gin and Yellow Chartreuse, stirred — a deceptively simple Savoy classic.

Rich, herbal and honeyed. Juniper meets Yellow Chartreuse's saffron-and-herb sweetness, kept lively by orange bitters and a twist of lemon oil. Warming and aromatic, more medicinal-complex than sweet — a slow sipper.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Gin
  • 0.75 oz Yellow Chartreuse
  • 2 dashes Orange Bitters
  • Lemon peel · optional garnish

Method

  1. 1

Add every ingredient to a mixing glass with ice.

  2. 2

    Stir until well chilled.

  3. 3

    Strain into a chilled coupe.

  4. 4

Express a lemon peel over the surface and drop it in.

The Story

The Alaska appears in the 1930 "Savoy Cocktail Book," where Harry Craddock drily noted it was "not, as would be imagined, a product of that region." It is essentially a gin drink sweetened and spiced by Yellow Chartreuse — the gentler, honeyed cousin of the green — with orange bitters tying it together. Few ingredients, no citrus to soften it, and all the better for the herbal complexity the Chartreuse brings.
